Boards of directors have always had to make a crucial decision: who to appoint as CEO? More than ever, the challenge is to find the person who can manage the organization on a daily basis while reshaping the organization's long-term future. Here are some keys to finding it. 

Leaders today deal with macroeconomic risks that no one can really manage or control. Forced to accept the unpredictability of the future, they must identify and understand the dimensions that connect the world to their organization. 

In this context, leaders must choose to adopt a fundamental posture: to focus on their legal responsibility (liability) or to assume their societal responsibility for the future (accountability). To do this, the next generation of leaders must move from a culture of egosystem to an ecosystem culture. 

Giving people a good reason 

To achieve this, leaders must be able to give people a good reason to do their best: a strong reason for their organization, which they embody with authenticity. Why does their organization exist? What would the world miss if it didn't exist? 

The leaders of tomorrow are thus required to develop skills that go beyond their strategic, influence or performance capabilities. They must develop a systemic vision of reality (i.e. the world and its organization), create the conditions for organizational success (which involves working on the culture and structure of the organization) and make possible the alignment between doing and being, for themselves and for each member of their organization. 

However, these skills cannot be exercised without a certain humility or a form of wisdom and exemplarity. If executives are primarily motivated by money, power and securities, if their only concern is financial performance, then they will inevitably fail. 

What is leadership? 

On the other hand, if they manage to make sense of these very different realities of performance, people, the planet and profit, while creating new roles for their organization, changing the culture of their organization, and taking care of their teams to develop, then they will contribute to the advent of a new era. 

True leaders do not hesitate to distribute their decision-making power to all levels of their organization. To do so, they must lay the groundwork for a mode of governance that replaces the hierarchy of people with a hierarchy of reasons for being. Such governance fosters creativity, innovation and initiative and places their organization at the heart of a self-evolving ecosystem. 

The ability to implement such governance is the essential hallmark of the leaders the world needs today.
